Our first stop in Aswan is the High Dam, a remarkable modern engineering achievement completed in 1970 under the leadership of President Gamal Abdel Nasser. Built with Soviet support after Western funding was withdrawn, the High Dam was completed in 1960 to control Nile flooding, boost agriculture, and generate hydroelectric power. It created Lake Nasser, one of the world’s largest man-made lakes, and symbolizes Egypt’s mid 20th century modernization.
We’ll then take a short boat ride to Philae Temple, dedicated to the goddess Isis, which was originally located on Philae Island and built during the Ptolemaic period. To save it from flooding caused by the Aswan High Dam, it was relocated to Agilkia Island in a UNESCO project (1972–1980), preserving its historical significance.
