Amazing 8 Day Cairo and Dahabiya Sailing Boat

This 8 day tour combines two nights exploring Cairo's pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum with four nights sailing the Nile aboard an exclusive Dahabiya, a traditional wooden sailing vessel that departs from Esna and docks at sites no motor cruise ship can reach. As one of our most distinctive Egypt Nile Cruise Packages, it is the only 8 day Dahabiya tour in the portfolio that opens in Cairo before boarding, giving travelers both the Pharaonic capital and the slow river in one itinerary.

The full route covers: the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, the Valley Temple, and the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo; a domestic flight to Luxor for Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple on the East Bank; the Esna Temple and the El Hegz Village cultural exchange at boarding; El Kab's ancient walled city and New Kingdom cliff tombs; the Temple of Horus at Edfu reached by horse-drawn carriage; Bisaw Island and the Gebel el-Silsila sandstone quarry with its Horemheb rock chapel; the Temple of Kom Ombo and the Crocodile Museum; Daraw's Nubian town; and Aswan's High Dam, Unfinished Obelisk, and Philae Temple before the return flight to Cairo.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrival in Cairo & Dinner Cruise

Your Tripidays representative meets you at Cairo International Airport and transfers you to your hotel by private vehicle. The evening begins immediately on the water.

    meal

    Nile Dinner Cruise

Featured in some of our most popular Egypt 8 day packages, this evening begins aboard a lit river vessel as Cairo's skyline reflects off the water around you. The city looks entirely different from the middle of the Nile at night, closer and louder all at once.

  • Day 2: Tour to Pyramids, Sphinx & GEM

Your Egyptologist guide picks you up after breakfast for a full day on the Giza Plateau and at the world's largest archaeological museum. This is the Cairo chapter that no Luxor-only Dahabiya tour includes.

    The Pyramids of Giza

Explore the iconic Great Pyramids of Giza. Stand in awe before the Pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, and discover the extraordinary engineering techniques that enabled their construction over 4,500 years ago.

    The Sphinx

Next, visit the awe-inspiring Great Sphinx of Giza. Admire the majestic limestone statue with the body of a lion and the head of a Pharaoh, a powerful symbol of ancient Egyptian strength and wisdom.

    Valley of Khafre Temples

Step inside the mummification house of Khafre, where walls of red granite were fitted without mortar to tolerances of less than a millimetre.

    Grand Egyptian Museum

You'll walk through over 100,000 artefacts spanning 5,000 years of civilisation, including Tutankhamun's complete burial collection displayed together for the first time since its discovery in 1922.

  • Day 3: Dahabiya Cairo Nile Cruise — Luxor, Esna & Boarding

A domestic flight takes you from Cairo to Luxor in under an hour. Your guide meets you at the airport and moves directly to the East Bank temples before the afternoon drive south to Esna, where your Dahabiya is docked and waiting.

    Karnak Temple

Visit the awe-inspiring Karnak Temple, the largest religious complex ever built in ancient Egypt. Walk through the monumental Great Hypostyle Hall with its towering columns and intricately carved reliefs, and explore sacred sanctuaries dedicated to the god Amun

    Luxor Temple

Continue your exploration on the East Bank with a visit to the Temple of Luxor, one of ancient Egypt’s most elegant and atmospheric monuments. Connected to Karnak by the ancient Avenue of Sphinxes, this temple was dedicated to the rejuvenation of kingship rather than funerary rituals.

    Esna Temple

Drive one hour south to Esna, where the temple of the ram-headed god Khnum sits below street level, excavated from centuries of accumulated town. The ceiling inside is painted with astronomical charts that have been preserved by the same silt that buried the building.

    El Hegz Village

After boarding the Dahabiya and sailing from Esna, you'll dock at El Hegz for a cultural exchange with a local family. Your guide translates as they answer questions about Nile village life, an encounter that no tour operating from a motor cruise ship schedules.

    Meals

    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 4: El Kab Ancient City & Edfu Temple of Horus

The Dahabiya docks early at El Kab, a site that appears on almost no standard itinerary. Horse-drawn carriages later carry you to Edfu. This is a day that belongs entirely to the boutique dahabiya Cairo Nile cruise experience; a motor ship cannot dock at either location.

    El Kab

You'll walk through mud-brick walls of the Ancient Walled City of Nekheb that have stood since 3,000 BC, enclosing a settlement older than the pyramids. The New Kingdom cliff tombs cut into the rock above the town are decorated with scenes of daily life so detailed that your guide can point to individual tools, crops, and boats.

    Temple of Horus at Edfu

Horse-drawn carriages deliver you to the best-preserved temple in Egypt, Ptolemaic, completed in 57 BC, with every wall still roofed and every hieroglyphic inscription intact. You'll enter the sanctuary where the gilded wooden statue of Horus once stood; the naos, the stone shrine, is still there, and it is one of only a handful that survive anywhere.

    Meals

    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 5: Bisaw Island, Gebel el-Silsila & Moonlight Dinner

The Dahabiya anchors at Bisaw Island at dawn. This day mixes a Nubian fishing village with one of the most atmospheric sites on the Nile, a sandstone quarry carved by the pharaohs themselves. No motor cruise itinerary includes either stop.

A cluster of colorful stone and brick houses on the sunlit bank of the Nile River in Egypt, framed by palm trees.

    Bisaw Island & Village

You'll step off the gangplank into a working fishing village where the men take you onto their boats and show you how they read the current. The bread here is baked directly on sun-heated stone, your guide arranges for you to watch, and sometimes to try.

    Gebel El-Silsila

Walk the quarry face where Ramesses II, Horemheb, Seti I, and Merenptah cut the sandstone for temples across Upper Egypt. The chisel marks are still visible at eye level. The rock chapel of Horemheb is cut directly into the cliff above the water, with painted shrines and stelae that see fewer than a few hundred visitors a year.

    Meals

    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 6: Kom Ombo, Daraw & Arrival in Aswan

The Dahabiya sails into Kom Ombo in the morning. This is the final sailing day Daraw's Nubian town follows before the boat reaches Aswan by evening.

    Temple of Kom Ombo

You'll approach by water, which is the only way to understand why this temple was built here. It sits at a bend in the Nile where crocodiles once gathered in numbers. The dual sanctuary design is unique in Egypt: two identical halves, one for Sobek, the crocodile god, one for Horus the Elder, sharing the same axis.

    Crocodile Museum

Directly beside the temple, the museum holds dozens of mummified crocodiles recovered from a sacred animal cemetery on site. The largest in scale is over four metres long and was wrapped in the same linen used for human burials.

    Daraw Nubian Town

A short distance from the dock, Daraw operates at a pace that larger cities don't. Your guide takes you through the market, introduces a few words of Arabic for bargaining, and stops at a cafe for halfabar, a local drink made from dried hibiscus and ginger served cold.

    Meals

    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 7: Aswan Highlights & Return to Cairo

You disembark the Dahabiya after breakfast. The morning covers Aswan's three signature sites before an evening flight returns you to Cairo for your final night.

    High Dam

Visit the Aswan High Dam, a modern engineering masterpiece that reshaped Egypt’s economy and landscape. Learn how this monumental project controls the Nile’s annual flooding, supports year-round agriculture, and generates hydroelectric power, playing a vital role in Egypt’s development since the 20th century.

    Unfinished Obelisk

You'll crouch beside a crack in the granite that stopped the project in the New Kingdom, leaving the largest obelisk ever attempted still attached to the bedrock. The scale of 42 metres, twice the height of any obelisk ever raised, only makes sense when you're standing next to it.

    Temple of Philae

A short motorboat takes you to Agilkia Island, where the temple of Isis was dismantled block by block and rebuilt on higher ground between 1972 and 1980 to save it from Lake Nasser. Your guide will point out where the original island waterline was the temple now sits where nothing but open water stood before the rescue operation.

The Dahabiya boards from Esna and docks at El Kab, Gebel el-Silsila, and Bisaw Island sites that motor cruise ships cannot access. A Dahabiya is a traditional wooden sailing vessel designed in the 19th-century style, with ensuite bathrooms and a shaded sun deck. Unlike motor cruise ships carrying 100 to 300 passengers, a Dahabiya moves slowly under sail, docks at small riverbank sites, and operates on a private schedule. For travellers who prefer a motor cruise with VIP Cairo access, see our luxury motor cruise alternative.

The Dahabiya boards at Esna on Day 3 after visiting Karnak and Luxor Temple, then sails south over four nights, stopping at El Hegz Village, El Kab, Edfu, Bisaw Island, Gebel el-Silsila, Kom Ombo, Daraw, and Aswan. Every stop from El Kab onward is inaccessible to standard motor cruise ships.
