    The Valley Temple of Khafre

    You enter one of the best-preserved temple complexes in all of Egypt, where the painted astronomical ceiling of the Hypostyle Hall — covering the full zodiac in vivid colour — is still largely intact after 2,000 years. Most visitors to Luxor never make it here; the drive north takes under an hour, and the site is nearly always quiet.

    Abydos Temple

    Walk through the seven sanctuaries of Seti I's temple, where some of the finest raised relief carving in ancient Egypt lines every wall — finer, many Egyptologists argue, than anything at Karnak or Luxor. Abydos was Egypt's most sacred city for 3,000 years, the burial ground of the earliest pharaohs and the site of the Osiris myth at its source.

    Your private vehicle departs Luxor after breakfast for the 215km drive south to Aswan, a comfortable three-hour journey through the Nile Valley with your Egyptologist on board.

    You take a short motorboat across the reservoir to reach Philae, an island temple complex dedicated to Isis that was dismantled stone by stone and rebuilt on higher ground to save it from the rising waters of Lake Nasser.     Aswan High Dam
