My wife picked this tour, and I'll admit I was skeptical about the pacing — three different destinations in ten days sounded exhausting. It wasn't. The Cairo days were full but not rushed, and once you're on the cruise, the schedule basically disappears. You eat, you visit a temple, you sit on the deck and watch the Nile. Our guide on the Cairo days was excellent; he had this habit of telling you one thing about a site that wasn't in any guidebook, then leaving you alone to look at it.

We got engaged in Buenos Aires and decided Egypt for the honeymoon mostly because neither of us had ever done anything like it. I was nervous the whole trip would feel like a history lesson. It didn't. Yes, there are temples everywhere, and yes, your guide will explain all of them, but there are also moments where you just stand somewhere and don't need anyone to explain anything — the felucca at sunset on the Nile was like that. Nobody talks. You just watch the sky change. The Sharm portion was exactly what we needed after five days of monuments.

The itinerary was better structured than most tours I've taken in this region. Cairo gets three days, which sounds like a lot until you're actually there and realise how much there is. The Grand Egyptian Museum alone takes half a day if you're doing it properly. The Nile cruise portion — Aswan boarding, then Kom Ombo and Edfu, then Luxor West Bank — flows in a way that makes logical sense once you're on it. My wife especially liked that the felucca was private. Small thing, but on a honeymoon you don't really want to share a boat with twelve strangers.

I've wanted to go to Egypt since I was about eight years old and spent way too long watching documentaries about the pyramids. The actual pyramids are bigger than the documentaries prepare you for. That sounds obvious, but it isn't; there's a moment when you get out of the car on the plateau, and your brain genuinely can't process the scale for a few seconds. My husband thought I was being dramatic. Then he got out of the car. The honeymoon framing of this trip worked well for us because it meant the small details were already handled: the felucca in the evening, the dinner on the last night in Sharm. Neither of us had to organize anything after the first day.
