You arrive by boat at Agilkia Island, where the Temple of Isis stands directly on the Nile. This High Dam and Philae Temple itinerary includes an Egyptologist-guided walk through the temple's pylons and inner sanctuary, one of the last active sites of ancient Egyptian religious worship before its relocation.
The High Dam
From here, your driver continues to the Aswan High Dam, a rock and clay embankment stretching 3.6 kilometers across the Nile. Your guide explains how the dam, completed in 1970, created Lake Nasser and now supplies most of Egypt's hydroelectric power.
The Unfinished Obelisk
From the dam, the drive continues to the ancient granite quarry that holds the Unfinished Obelisk. At an intended 42 meters, this single block of stone would have been Egypt's largest obelisk had a crack not stopped the carving partway through, and the tool marks left by ancient quarry workers are still visible in the surrounding granite.
