After breakfast, drive to Baharia Oasis, and once you arrive, your 4x4 vehicle heads southwest on the Desert Road a 365-kilometre drive through open Western Desert that takes four to five hours and arrives at an elevation drop into the oasis basin.
You'll arrive at the main settlement of Bahariya and get your bearings in a place that operates on a slower register than Cairo — date palms, low stone buildings, and a market where your guide knows the vendors by name. It is the practical and cultural hub of the oasis, and worth an hour of unhurried walking before the museum.
Inside, you'll find gilded mummies from a necropolis discovered in 1996 when a donkey stumbled into a burial shaft, eventually revealing over 250 tombs from the Greco-Roman period. The gold-leaf masks covering the faces were applied to identify the deceased in the afterlife — the detail in the painted wrappings varies from tomb to tomb, reflecting the family's wealth.
