You'll move through the upper floor first, where the Royal Mummy Room holds 27 pharaohs, including Ramesses II, whose face is visible, the linen wrappings intact after 3,200 years. Your Egyptologist guide takes you through the Amarna gallery before the crowds reach it, where Akhenaten's distorted limestone portraits are unlike anything else in the building.
From the northern terrace, you'll look out over a city of 22 million with medieval minarets in the foreground and the Giza Plateau visible on clear days some 15 kilometres south. The Citadel has been Cairo's military and administrative centre since Saladin built it in 1176. Your guide will walk you through the sequence of rulers who expanded it.
Step inside and you'll find yourself under a central dome 52 metres high, the interior cool and dim after the courtyard heat outside. The alabaster panels covering the lower walls — the reason it's called the Alabaster Mosque were cut from the same quarry used at the Pyramids of Giza.
The Royal Mummies Hall here holds 22 pharaohs and queens transferred from the Egyptian Museum in 2021 — each in a climate-controlled individual case, displayed horizontally at eye level so you see the faces clearly.
You'll walk the full length of the street, roughly one kilometre, past 13th-century Mamluk gates, Fatimid minarets, and restored merchant houses that have been standing since the 10th century. The street was Cairo's main commercial artery for over a thousand years; your guide will identify the buildings by dynasty as you pass them.
