    The Great Pyramids of Giza

    Stand at the base of the Great Pyramid and look up at 146 metres; the scale doesn't register until you're next to it. Your guide places the construction timeline in context: built over roughly 20 years, completed around 2560 BC, and still the largest stone structure on earth.

    The Great Sphinx

    You'll approach the Sphinx from the east, the direction it faces, which is how its builders intended it to be seen. At 73 metres long and carved from a single limestone outcrop, it predates almost every monument around it.

    Valley of the Temples

    Your guide walks you through the causeway connecting Khafre's pyramid to its valley temple, where the embalming and ritual preparation of the pharaoh once took place.

After breakfast, fly to Aswan, a peaceful city along the River Nile and a key stop in your Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, and Hurghada itinerary.     Aswan High Dam

    You'll stand on the dam and look out over Lake Nasser, one of the largest man-made lakes on earth, at 550 kilometres long. Built between 1960 and 1970 with Soviet engineering support, it ended the annual Nile floods that had shaped Egyptian agriculture for 5,000 years.

    Unfinished Obelisk

    Still lying in the granite quarry where it was abandoned 3,500 years ago, this is the largest known obelisk ever attempted, 42 metres, nearly one-third longer than any obelisk successfully erected. A crack in the granite stopped the project mid-cut; what remains tells you more about how obelisks were made than any finished example can.

    Philae Temple 

    Your guide takes you by boat to the island of Agilkia, where Philae Temple was dismantled block by block and rebuilt after the High Dam flooded its original site. Dedicated to the goddess Isis, the carvings here span a thousand years of Egyptian and Roman occupation — some of the last hieroglyphs ever inscribed.

  • Day 4: Abu Simbel Temples & Overland to Luxor

    An early start, breakfast boxes collected before departure, vehicle waiting in the dark. The drive south to Abu Simbel takes roughly three to four hours through open desert, the road straight and the landscape empty.     Abu Simbel Temple

    You arrive at the cliff face, and the four seated colossi of Ramses II come into view, each one 20 metres tall, carved directly from the sandstone mountain around 1264 BC. After Abu Simbel, your vehicle heads north through Upper Egypt toward Luxor, approximately four hours.
