This 9 day Egypt and Turkey tour combines Cairo, Aswan, Abu Simbel, and Luxor in Egypt with Istanbul and Cappadocia in Turkey. As one of our Egypt Multi Country Tours, it takes travelers through Egypt's Nile Valley temples before continuing to Turkey's Byzantine and Ottoman landmarks. It is the only 9 day Egypt & Turkey itinerary that reaches Abu Simbel's Ramesses temples before flying to Istanbul and Cappadocia.
Day 1 starts with arrival in Cairo and an evening Nile dinner cruise. Day 2 covers the Giza Pyramids Complex, the Great Pyramid, the Sphinx, the Valley Temple, and the Grand Egyptian Museum, before a flight to Aswan. Day 3 continues in Aswan with the Aswan High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk, and the Philae Temple. Day 4 travels to the Abu Simbel Temples by road, then on to Luxor by train. Day 5 in Luxor covers Karnak Temple, Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, and the Colossi of Memnon, before returning to Cairo. Day 6 is a flight from Cairo to Istanbul. Day 7 in Istanbul covers Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar. Day 8 flies to Cappadocia for Uchisar Castle, Göreme, Avanos, Pasabag, and Devrent Valley, with an optional hot air balloon, before returning to Istanbul. Day 9 is the departure from Istanbul.

Arrival at Cairo International Airport is followed by a private transfer into the city, with the evening set aside for a Nile dinner cruise.
You board as the sun sets over the Cairo skyline, the boat easing away from the dock into the current. A set dinner and live folkloric entertainment run for the length of the cruise, which covers a stretch of the river past the city's illuminated riverside districts.

The day begins with a short drive to the Giza Plateau, followed by an afternoon flight south to Aswan.
You catch your first full view of the Giza plateau as the car rounds the ridge, three pyramids rising against the desert skyline. The complex includes six subsidiary pyramids alongside the three main structures of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure.
You stand at the base of the Sphinx, looking up at a face carved from a single ridge of bedrock. The guardian figure stretches 73 meters long and rises 20 meters high.
You step through granite pillars into the Valley Temple, one of the best-preserved structures from the Old Kingdom. Its alabaster floors and pink granite walls were part of the purification rituals performed before Khafre's burial.
You walk into the Grand Egyptian Museum, built to hold more than 100,000 artifacts, a central staircase lined with statues rising toward the pyramids beyond the glass. The complete Tutankhamun collection is displayed together here for the first time.

Aswan's sights are reached by a short drive along the Nile's east bank before a boat crossing to the island of the Philae Temple.
Your guide points out the scale of the High Dam as you cross it, a structure that reshaped Egypt's relationship with the Nile. Built between 1960 and 1970, it created Lake Nasser and now supplies a significant share of the country's electricity.
You walk alongside a granite obelisk still attached to its quarry bed, abandoned mid-carving. Had it been completed, it would have stood 42 meters tall and weighed roughly 1,200 tons, the largest obelisk ever attempted.
A short boat ride brings you to Agilkia Island, where Philae Temple rises directly from the water's edge. The entire complex was moved here stone by stone in the 1960s and 70s to save it from the rising waters of the dam.

You approach the temple facade from below, four seated colossi of Ramesses II towering over the entrance. The entire monument was cut into blocks and relocated 65 meters higher in a UNESCO rescue operation between 1964 and 1968, ahead of the rising waters of Lake Nasser.

Your guide walks you through the ram-headed sphinx avenue into Karnak's open courtyards, columns rising higher with every hall. Construction here spanned roughly 33 centuries, one of the longest building programs in history.
Your guide walks you down the sloped corridor of the Valley of the Kings, whichever royal tomb is open that day, where the painted ceiling astronomy is close enough to read without binoculars. Istanbul's old city is explored on foot, covering four major sites within walking distance of each other.
You step beneath the dome, and the space opens upward, mosaics and marble columns rising toward a ceiling that has stood for nearly 1,500 years. The dome itself spans 55 meters and appears to float above a ring of windows at its base.
You catch sight of six minarets rising together as you cross Sultanahmet Square, a silhouette unique among Istanbul's mosques. Inside, more than 20,000 hand-painted İznik tiles cover the walls and lower domes.
You cross open ground where chariot races once drew tens of thousands of spectators. Only a handful of monuments remain from what was once Constantinople's largest public arena.
Your guide leads you through the Second Courtyard into the Treasury, where cases of imperial jewels line the walls. The palace complex housed the Ottoman court for close to four centuries.
You're pulled into the noise and color of the bazaar the moment you pass through its gates, vendors calling out over stacks of lanterns and carpets. More than 4,000 shops line its covered streets, making it one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world.

You duck into a rock-cut chapel, its walls covered in frescoes that have survived since the region's early Christian communities carved them here. The open-air complex protects churches and dwellings carved from the 10th century onward, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
You look up at Uchisar Castle from below, a fortress carved directly into the highest rock formation in the region. Its tunnels and chambers, cut from volcanic tuff, once served as both watchtower and refuge.
You watch a potter's wheel spin in a workshop beside the Kızılırmak River, red clay taking shape under hands trained through generations. Avanos has worked this same clay for around 3,000 years, one of the region's oldest continuous crafts.
You walk into a valley of towering, multi-headed rock columns, formed long before any structure was built here. Known as Monks Valley, the formations are estimated at around 60 million years old and once sheltered Byzantine-era hermits.
You wander among rock shapes that seem to form animals and figures without any carving involved. Wind and rain shaped these formations over millions of years. Natural erosion is the only sculptor here.
