    You stand on the dam road looking across Lake Nasser, which at 550 kilometres long is the largest artificial reservoir by surface area in the world. Your guide explains that its construction in 1971 forced the relocation of Abu Simbel and 22 other Nubian temples, the dam created the lake that would have submerged them.

    Unfinished Obelisk

    Lying on its side in the granite quarry, still attached to the bedrock on one face, this obelisk would have stood 42 metres and weighed 1,200 tonnes if completed, larger than any obelisk ever successfully raised. Your guide shows you the dolerite pounding balls still lying in the working trenches alongside it, left by workers who abandoned the project when the stone cracked.
