This 5 day Cairo and Bahariya Oasis safari is one of our most distinctive Egypt journey packages, combining Egypt's most famous ancient landmarks with an unforgettable desert adventure. The tour covers the Giza Pyramids, the Great Sphinx, and the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo before moving into Egypt's Western Desert for an overnight safari camp in Bahariya Oasis and the White Desert. Cairo's only 5 day tour combines the Giza Pyramids with overnight safari camping in Bahariya Oasis and the White Desert's surreal chalk formations.
Day 2 visits the Giza Plateau, the Great Pyramids, the Great Sphinx, and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Day 3 is the pivot: a 350-km private vehicle transfer southwest from Cairo into Bahariya Oasis, continuing into the White Desert and Black Desert for an overnight camp among chalk formations and volcanic hills. Dinner
Your Egyptologist guide collects you from the hotel after breakfast for a full day on the Giza Plateau and at the Grand Egyptian Museum. All transfers are by private vehicle throughout.
You stand at the base of the Great Pyramid and look up at 146 meters; it held the record as the world's tallest structure for nearly 4,000 years, and the scale only registers when you're directly beneath it. Your guide positions you for the full three-pyramid view before the tour coaches arrive.
Next, admire the mysterious Great Sphinx, the legendary guardian of the Giza Plateau. Its ancient face, carved from limestone, has witnessed the rise and fall of dynasties.

A 350-km overland push into the Western Desert oasis
After breakfast, your private 4x4 departs Cairo for the 350-km southwest drive to Bahariya Oasis, approximately four to five hours through open desert road. This is the core 5 day Cairo and Bahariya Oasis White Desert safari day: Bahariya village, then deep into the White and Black Deserts before sunset camp.
You arrive in a palm-lined depression in the Western Desert plateau, sitting roughly 100 meters below the surrounding plateau edge. The temperature drops noticeably as you enter. Your guide takes you through the village streets, where dates, olives, and hot springs have sustained settlement here since pharaonic times.
From the oasis, your 4x4 heads south into a landscape of cone-shaped volcanic hills dusted with black iron-rich basalt. The color contrast against the pale sand reads as almost unreal at midday. You climb one of the flatter formations for the full panorama before continuing deeper into the desert.
The chalk formations appear gradually, then all at once, wind-eroded pillars and mushroom shapes in cream and white, some reaching six meters, casting sharp shadows as the sun drops. You walk among them at the hour when the light turns the formations amber, then settle into camp as the colour leaves the sky entirely.
Your Bedouin camp is set directly among the formations, fire, a traditional dinner prepared on-site, and a sky with no light competition for hundreds of kilometers in any direction. This is what makes this tour categorically different from a hotel-based oasis day trip.

Arc III · White Desert & Cairo
Chalk formations, desert camping, sunrise, and the final Cairo departure
You wake in the camp to a desert sunrise, and the chalk formations catch the first light before anything else on the horizon. After breakfast in the open air, there is time for a final walk among the rock formations before the 4x4 returns to Cairo by private vehicle. The afternoon in Cairo is unscheduled shopping, rest, or a restaurant dinner at your own pace.
The formations look entirely different at dawn than they did at dusk, the shadows reverse, the scale shifts, and the silence before the wind picks up is the part most travelers describe last. You have an hour here before the drive begins.
On the return route through Bahariya, your guide stops at the English Mountain, a low plateau ridge above the oasis floor used as an observation post during World War I. The view covers the full oasis depression and the desert edge in every direction, an orientation point that makes the geography of the Western Desert legible for the first time.

After checkout, your Tripidays representative transfers you to Cairo International Airport by private vehicle. Departure timing determines how much of the morning remains. Your guide can arrange a final coffee stop or last-minute souvenir time if your flight allows. No other 5 day Cairo itinerary combines the Giza Plateau with an overnight safari camp in the White Desert; the two are usually sold as separate products.
The White Desert is a national park in Egypt's Western Desert, 45 km north of Bahariya Oasis, defined by wind eroded chalk formations, some reaching six meters, that shift colour from white to amber at sunset.
