This 5 day Cairo and Fayoum oasis tour is one of the most rewarding Egypt getaways, covering Cairo, Giza, and the Fayoum Oasis in a single private overland itinerary, no flights, no cruise, hotel-based throughout. Egypt's only 5 day tour focused exclusively on the Fayoum Oasis ecosystem. It combines the Giza Pyramids and Grand Egyptian Museum with Wadi El Rayan waterfalls, Qarun Lake, and the fossil-rich Wadi Al Hitan (Valley of Whales).
Day 1 is arrival and transfer to your Cairo hotel. Day 2 covers the Giza Pyramids Complex, the Sphinx, and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Day 3 is a full day overland trip southwest to the Fayoum Oasis: Qarun Lake, the ancient El Fayoum waterwheels, and the Wadi El Rayan waterfalls and protected reserve. Day 4 returns to Cairo for the Egyptian Museum, Salah El Din Citadel, Mohamed Ali Mosque, Al Muizz Street, and Khan El Khalili Bazaar. Day 5 is airport transfer and departure.
Only on this route
Most Cairo day trip packages treat Fayoum as an optional bolt-on, capped at half a day to keep the schedule tight. This tour builds Day 3 entirely around the oasis Qarun Lake, the Saqia waterwheels, and Wadi El Rayan covered in full, with return to Cairo the same evening.

Arc I · Giza & the GEM
Cairo's monuments and museum anchor the first leg

Your Tripidays representative meets you at Cairo International Airport and transfers you directly to your hotel by private vehicle. Your 5 day Cairo and Fayoum oasis tour begins here, following the same seamless arrival process offered across all 5-day Egypt tour packages. Nothing is required of you today except settling in.

In the evening of your first day in Cairo, glide along the Nile on a delightful dinner cruise. Enjoy traditional cuisine, gentle breezes, and the shimmering night skyline, a magical start to your 5 Day Cairo and Fayoum Oasis Tour.

Dinner

Your guide collects you from the hotel and heads first to Giza, then to the Grand Egyptian Museum in the afternoon. All transfers by private vehicle throughout.

Start your day exploring the Giza Pyramids Complex, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Discover the fascinating tales behind the pharaohs and their monumental legacy with your expert guide.

Conclude your day with a visit to the Valley of the Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that showcases some of the best-preserved ancient Greek temples outside of Greece. Wander through this remarkable site, appreciating the stunning architecture and landscape.

Stand face to face with the Great Sphinx, the timeless guardian of the pyramids, and uncover the myths surrounding this half human, half lion masterpiece.

You'll enter the largest archaeological museum on earth, purpose built to house the full Tutankhamun collection, 5,000 objects displayed together for the first time in history. The golden throne, the innermost coffin, the ceremonial chariots: your guide identifies what to slow down for and what connects them.

Breakfast, Lunch
Arc II · Qarun to Wadi El Rayan
Desert lakes, ancient waterwheels, and Egypt's only natural waterfalls

Your guide picks you up after breakfast for the drive southwest toward the Fayoum Oasis, roughly 90 kilometres from Cairo, by private vehicle throughout. This is the core day of this 5 day Cairo and Fayoum oasis tour, and the only guided full-day oasis excursion in any 5 day Cairo package.

You'll arrive at the edge of one of the world's oldest natural lakes, Qarun, which has held water continuously for around 70,000 years, and the shoreline today still draws migratory birds that stop here on routes between Europe and sub-Saharan Africa. The desert wraps the water on three sides, and the silence is disorienting in the best way.

Your guide will walk you past the Saqia, the wooden waterwheels that have redirected Nile water into Fayoum's irrigation canals since the Ptolemaic period, over 2,000 years ago. They are still turning, still functional, and still the reason this oasis exists at the scale it does.

You'll reach Egypt's only natural waterfalls inside a protected desert reserve, two connected lakes at different elevations, with water cascading between them where desert dunes meet open water on both sides. The lower lake sits at 45 metres below sea level, and the contrast between the sand, the rush of water, and the flat horizon beyond it is the kind of detail that stays. Travellers looking to explore a deeper desert environment after Fayoum often continue with a Bahariya Oasis & White Desert safari, where chalk formations, black volcanic hills, and overnight desert camping become the focus of the journey.

Breakfast, Lunch
Arc III · Citadel to Khan El Khalili
Islamic Cairo's layered history from fortress ridge to bazaar floor

Your guide collects you after breakfast for a full day across Cairo's pharaonic and Islamic layers. All sites by private vehicle, on the ground on foot.

You'll move through rooms that predate the Grand Egyptian Museum's curation. This is where generations of archaeologists first catalogued Egypt's ancient world, and the density of objects is overwhelming in a way the newer museum isn't. Your guide cuts through the volume and takes you directly to what matters: the Royal Mummy Room and the original Tutankhamun display cases.

Stand on the ridge that Saladin chose in 1176 to control Cairo from above the Citadel sits at a point where you can read the city's entire geography in a single view, from the Nile to the desert edge. It held military and political authority for nearly 700 years without interruption.

Inside the Citadel walls, your guide will take you into the Ottoman mosque that Mohamed Ali built between 1830 and 1848 to signal a complete break with the Mamluk era. The alabaster clad interior amplifies light in a way that makes the scale feel larger than the footprint suggests.

You'll walk one of the oldest continuously inhabited streets in the Islamic world. Al Muizz has been a commercial and ceremonial artery since the Fatimid period, and the density of intact medieval architecture along its length is found nowhere else in Cairo. Your guide names the dynasties behind each façade.

Continue to the lively Khan El Khalili Bazaar, Cairo’s most famous market. Wander through its bustling alleys filled with spices, handcrafted jewelry, and souvenirs, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of Egypt’s oldest shopping district. Travelers wanting to continue beyond Cairo often choose to add Luxor temples to your Egypt oasis tour, extending the journey south to Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, and the Valley of the Kings.

Breakfast, Lunch

After a final breakfast, checkout procedures are completed, and your private vehicle transfers you to Cairo International Airport. Travelers with additional time in Egypt often prefer to add a Red Sea beach finish to your oasis trip, combining the cultural highlights of Cairo and Fayoum with several days of relaxation on Egypt's Red Sea coast before flying home.
