Joyful 11 Day Family Egypt & Jordan Tour With Nile Cruise + Petra

This 11 day family tour is one of the most comprehensive Egypt combined tour packages, covering Egypt and Jordan in a single child paced itinerary. Families explore Cairo's Giza Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum, and enjoy a 3 night Nile Cruise through Aswan, Kom Ombo, Edfu, and Luxor on the Egyptian side, before continuing to Amman, Jerash's Roman ruins, Ajloun Castle, Madaba, Mount Nebo, the Dead Sea, and Petra in Jordan. It is the only Egypt & Jordan family tour that combines a Nile cruise, Jerash's Roman ruins, and Petra with family-friendly accommodation throughout both countries.

Day 1 begins with arrival at Cairo International Airport and an evening Nile Dinner Cruise. Day 2 covers the Giza Pyramids Complex, the Great Pyramid of Khufu, Pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, the Great Sphinx, and the Valley Temple of Khafre, followed by the Grand Egyptian Museum, then a flight to Aswan. Day 3 visits the Aswan High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk, and Philae Temple before boarding the Nile Cruise. Day 4 sails to Kom Ombo Temple, a dual sanctuary dedicated to Sobek and Horus. Day 5 docks at the Temple of Horus at Edfu. Day 6 covers Luxor's West Bank Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple at Deir el-Bahari, and the Colossi of Memnon, then the East Bank's Karnak Temple Complex, before a return flight to Cairo. Day 7 is the Cairo Amman flight, arriving at Queen Alia International Airport. Day 8 visits Jerash, the Hippodrome and Temple of Artemis, then Ajloun Castle, then the Amman Citadel's Temple of Hercules and Umayyad Palace. Day 9 goes to Madaba's St. George's Church for the 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land, then Mount Nebo, then the Dead Sea. Day 10 is full in Petra: through the Siq to Al Khazneh, the Royal Tombs, the Great Theatre, and Qasr al-Bint. Day 11 is the departure from Amman.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrival in Cairo & Dinner Cruise

Your guide meets the family at Cairo International Airport and transfers everyone to the Cairo hotel in a private air-conditioned vehicle; the lead guide runs through the full 11 day schedule that evening, so children know what to expect each morning.

    Nile Dinner Cruise

Your family steps onto a lit river boat as Cairo's skyline reflects across the water on both sides. The cruise runs approximately 2 hours, with a buffet and live musical performance, a contained, easy experience that works well as a first evening with children of any age.

    Meals

    Dinner

  • Day 2: Great Giza Pyramids & GEM

Your guide collects the family after breakfast for the drive to the Giza Plateau; the morning is spent there before the midday heat builds, then the afternoon moves indoors to the Grand Egyptian Museum before the early-evening flight to Aswan.

    The Great Pyramids of Giza

Stand before the awe-inspiring Great Pyramid of Khufu at the Giza Pyramids Complex, along with the Pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure. These ancient wonders are a highlight of any Cairo, Nile Cruise, and Jordan tour.

    The Great Sphinx

See the legendary Great Sphinx of Giza, the iconic guardian of the plateau, captivating travelers with its mysterious gaze and ancient history.

    Valley Temple of Khafre

Step through the granite entrance into a hall of monolithic Aswan granite pillars, each cut without mortar and still in original alignment after 4,500 years. The temple sits at the foot of the causeway connecting the Sphinx enclosure to the Khafre pyramid the physical link between the two structures becomes clear inside.

    Grand Egyptian Museum

Visit the world-famous Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), home to thousands of treasures from ancient Egypt. This modern archaeological marvel is a must-see on your Nile cruise and Jordan tour.

    Meals

    Breakfast, Lunch

  • Day 3: Visit Aswan Wonders

After breakfast and check-out from the Aswan hotel, the guide leads the morning across three sites that each tell a different chapter of how Aswan shaped Egypt: ancient stone-working, ancient religion, and 20th-century engineering, then the family boards the Nile Cruise in the afternoon.

    Aswan High Dam

Explore the modern Aswan High Dam, an engineering marvel that transformed Egypt’s agriculture and helped control the Nile River’s flow. Families looking for a slightly shorter itinerary with the same Cairo, Nile Cruise, Amman, and Petra highlights may also consider our 10 day Egypt Jordan Nile Cruise, Amman & Petra tour.

    Unfinished Obelisk

You crouch alongside a granite shaft still attached to the quarry floor, abandoned mid-cut when a crack appeared in the stone. If completed, it would have stood 42 metres and weighed 1,200 tonnes, the largest obelisk ever attempted in ancient Egypt. The cut marks from copper tools are still visible along the sides, which children find immediately tangible in a way that finished monuments are not.

    Philae Temple

Your family reaches the Philae temple by motorboat, crossing to the island of Agilkia, where the entire complex was dismantled block by block and rebuilt between 1972 and 1980 to save it from Lake Nasser. Dedicated to Isis, the temple's painted relief carvings retain colour in the inner chambers, and the boat crossing feels distinct from every other site on the Egypt leg.

    Meals

    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 4: Explore the Kom Ombo Temple

The cruise docks at Kom Ombo mid-morning; the family walks directly from the riverbank up to the temple, which sits on a promontory above the Nile. This is a shorter day by design, one temple, then back on board for the afternoon sail, which gives younger children recovery time between the Aswan sites and the Edfu visit tomorrow.

    Kom Ombo Temple

Your guide leads the family through the left-side entrance, Sobek's half of the temple, then across the central axis into Horus's mirrored half, so the structural logic of the dual dedication becomes physical rather than explained. Built during the Ptolemaic period between 180 and 47 BC, the temple is unusual in ancient Egypt for its strict bilateral symmetry: two of every hall, two of every sanctuary, two of every god.

    Meals

    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 5: Explore Edfu & Luxor Temples

After breakfast on board, the family visits Edfu Temple before returning to the cruise and sailing onward to Luxor. In the evening, they explore the beautifully illuminated Luxor Temple before spending the night on board.

    Edfu Temple

Discover the majestic Temple of Edfu, dedicated to Horus, one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt, showcasing both Egyptian tradition and Greek influence.

    Luxor Temple

Walk the central axis from the entrance pylon, flanked by the single remaining obelisk of the original pair, the second now in the Place de la Concorde in Paris, through the colonnade of Amenhotep III to the inner sanctuary. At night, the temple is lit from below, and the columns cast long shadows across the Roman chapel, the medieval mosque built inside the hypostyle hall, and the pharaonic reliefs beneath both.

    Meals

    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 6: Luxor West & East Bank Tour

After breakfast and checking out from the cruise, the family begins with Luxor's East Bank, exploring Karnak Temple before crossing to the West Bank to visit its famous ancient sites. Following lunch, they transfer to Luxor Airport for the flight back to Cairo, where they spend the final night before the Jordan adventure begins tomorrow.

    Karnak Temple

Your guide takes the family in through the Avenue of Sphinxes and along the processional axis into the Great Hypostyle Hall, with 134 sandstone columns across 5,000 square metres, the largest columned hall ever built. Children navigate the forest of columns independently while adults read the scale: the hall alone could contain Notre-Dame Cathedral.

    Valley of the Kings

Visit the legendary Valley of the Kings, where pharaohs like Tutankhamun and Ramses III were laid to rest.

    Hatshepsut Temple

See the striking Hatshepsut Temple, built into the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari. This architectural masterpiece honors one of Egypt’s most successful female pharaohs and reflects her vision and grandeur.

    Colossi of Memnon

Visit the massive Colossi of Memnon, two towering statues that once guarded the mortuary temple of Pharaoh Amenhotep III. These iconic monuments have long fascinated travelers. For a 12-day version with Abu Simbel added to the Egypt leg, see our 12-day Egypt & Jordan complete Nile cruise.

    Meals

    Breakfast, Lunch

  • Day 7: Fly from Cairo to Amman

After breakfast and check-out from the Cairo hotel, transfer to Cairo International Airport for the flight to Amman; on arrival at Queen Alia International Airport, the Jordanian guide meets the family and transfers everyone to the Amman hotel. This is a travel day, no sightseeing scheduled, giving the family an afternoon to settle into Amman before three consecutive full days in Jordan.

    Meals

    Breakfast

  • Day 8: Jerash, Ajloun Castle & Amman Citadel

The guide drives the family north from Amman to Jerash, first the longest site of the day and best in the morning light, then to Ajloun Castle, then back into Amman for the Citadel in the afternoon. The day covers two distinct periods of Jordanian history: Roman-era Jerash and medieval Ajloun, with the Citadel spanning both.

    Jerash

Your family walks through the South Gate, and the Oval Plaza opens immediately: 90 metres of oval colonnaded space, the paving stones original, the columns still standing on three sides. Jerash was continuously occupied from the Bronze Age through the Byzantine and Umayyad periods; the Oval Plaza was the civic gathering point of the Roman city of Gerasa.

    Hippodrome

Your guide positions the children at the starting-gate end of the 245-metre track long enough that the far end is a genuine distance away, where chariot races drew crowds of up to 15,000 in Roman times. Replica chariots and re-enactment displays run at scheduled times, which children engage with more directly than static archaeology.

    Temple of Artemis

You climb to the temple podium through an approach that passes the Cardo Maximus and a series of votive niches, arriving at columns that move slightly in the wind, a deliberate engineering feature visible if you watch the column capitals carefully. Dedicated to Artemis in the 2nd century AD, the temple's 12 surviving Corinthian columns stand 13 metres high.

    Ajloun Castle

Your family climbs the hill road to the castle entrance at around 1,250 metres elevation, with the Jordan Valley and, on clear days, the West Bank hills visible from the towers. Built in 1184 AD by Saladin's commander Izz al-Din Usama to guard iron ore trade routes and counter Crusader movement, the castle is compact enough for children to walk every level without fatigue.

    Amman Citadel

Your guide walks the family up to the Temple of Hercules first, only two columns and a massive stone hand remain from the 2nd-century AD Roman temple, but the hand gives children an immediate sense of the original statue's scale. The Umayyad Palace complex sits 50 metres to the north, its reconstructed audience hall dome the only covered space on the hilltop; the Citadel sits 850 metres above sea level, with Amman's residential hills visible in every direction.

    Meals

    Breakfast, Lunch

  • Day 9: Madaba, Mount Nebo & Dead Sea

The guide drives the family south from Amman to Madaba first, then the short distance to Mount Nebo, then down the escarpment road to the Dead Sea. The route descends nearly 1,200 metres in elevation over the course of the day, which children notice physically as the air changes.

    St. George’s Church

Your family walks directly to the mosaic map set into the church floor, a 6th-century Byzantine cartographic work showing the Holy Land from Lebanon to the Nile Delta, with Jerusalem at its centre. The original map measured 94 metres by 25 metres; around 25% survives in the church floor, with the Jerusalem section intact enough to identify the city's main streets and gates by name.

    Mount Nebo

Visit Mount Nebo, where Prophet Moses is believed to have viewed the Promised Land. Take in breathtaking views of the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and even Jerusalem on a clear day.

    Dead Sea Experience

Your family walks into the water, and the resistance of the water pushing back is immediate. The salinity is around 34%, roughly 10 times that of ocean water, and floating without effort is the experience rather than swimming. At 430 metres below sea level, the Dead Sea is the lowest point on Earth's surface; the dense air at this altitude has measurably higher oxygen content, which children notice as an absence of effort on what would otherwise be a hot walk.

    Meals

    Breakfast, Lunch

  • Day 10: Petra — Full Day in the Nabataean Capital

The guide drives the family south from Amman, approximately 3 hours, arriving at the Petra Visitor Centre before 9 am to enter before the main crowds. The full day is Petra only: the sequence runs Siq → Al Khazneh → Royal Tombs → Great Theatre → Qasr al-Bint, with the family setting the pace through the middle section.

    The Siq

Your family walks the 1.2-kilometre slot canyon walls rising to 80 metres on both sides, the path narrowing to 3 metres at its tightest, and the Treasury façade appears at the end of a final bend without warning. The Siq was the Nabataeans' sacred processional route into Petra; the carved niches in the walls held deity figurines, and the original terracotta water channel is visible at ankle height along the left wall.

    Al Khazneh

Your children step out of the Siq into the open space in front of the 43-metre-high façade carved directly into rose-red sandstone. The width of the canyon doubles instantly, and the structure fills the entire view. Al Khazneh was carved in the 1st century BC as a royal tomb, not a treasury; the urn at the top bears bullet marks from Bedouin who believed it held gold, a detail children ask about without prompting.

    Royal Tombs

Your guide leads the family along the cliff face to the four monumental tomb façades cut side by side into the eastern escarpment: the Urn Tomb, Silk Tomb, Corinthian Tomb, and Palace Tomb, each in a different architectural register. The Urn Tomb's interior was converted to a Byzantine church in 446 AD; the original Nabataean tomb carvings and the Byzantine crosses carved over them sit on the same walls.

    Great Theatre

You walk into a semicircular theatre carved directly from the rock with seating for approximately 3,000. The cavea cut into an existing Nabataean tomb area, the tomb façades still visible in the rock face behind the upper seats. Built in the 1st century AD, its form is Roman but its material is entirely Petra sandstone in the same colour spectrum as everything else in the city.

    Qasr al-Bint

Your family reaches the only free-standing stone structure in Petra, a Nabataean temple built in the 1st century BC, its walls still standing 23 metres high in places. Qasr al-Bint was the most sacred temple in Petra, likely dedicated to Dushara, the principal Nabataean deity; the colonnaded temenos surrounding it defines the civic centre of the ancient city. If you want to add more destinations across both countries, our 13 Day Egypt Jordan Multi-City Cairo & Nile Cruise tour provides an even broader multi-city experience while retaining the Nile Cruise and Petra highlights.
